SAS inSchool® Curriculum Pathways® recognized for Java technology innovation
Writing Reviser, new product feature, helps students become better writers

CARY, NC (May 09, 2007) – SAS inSchool Curriculum Pathways' new Writing Reviser was honored today with a Duke's Choice Award at the 12th annual JavaOne conference, the world's biggest Java technology event. The awards celebrate innovation in the world of Java technology and are granted to the best and most innovative projects using the Java platform. A new addition to Curriculum Pathways, SAS inSchool's flagship Web-based educational product, the Writing Reviser helps students make their writing more clear, concise and powerful.

"The Writing Reviser enables students to ask questions experienced writers ask automatically - from big picture issues such as purpose, thesis and development to smaller details involving words, phrases, clauses and sentence structure," said Kathy Lee, General Manager of the SAS Education Practice. "Students can exert greater control over their work and say what they mean in the most compelling language possible. Unlike a grammar checker, the product seeks less to identify mistakes than to point out opportunities for invigorating the student's work."

The Writing Reviser uses research-based practices to analyze a student's work, employing an English language parser, a rules engine and a sophisticated set of language rules. It searches for weak and passive verbs, monotonous sentence patterns, choppy prepositional phrases, clichés, misplaced clauses, wordiness and other problems. It even identifies nouns students might want to convert to verbs.

Added Lee, "The Writing Reviser is like a virtual tutor for students. It enhances the revision process, giving teachers an ally in helping students develop strong written communication skills. Also, it can save so much time for teachers who are trying to assess students' grasp of the subject matter but who end up having to spend time cleaning up the writing itself."

The Writing Reviser will be included in this summer's release of Curriculum Pathways® 2008. An online resource for students and teachers in high schools, community colleges and virtual schools, Curriculum Pathways provides content in the core disciplines of English, mathematics, social studies, science and Spanish. It has more than 170 InterActivities and 855 ready-to-use lessons that enable technology-rich instruction and engage higher-order thinking skills.

Curriculum Pathways, which is used by thousands of customers in more than 30 states, also received a Duke's Choice Award in 2005 for its Introductory Algebra Java application.

Duke's Choice Award winners are selected by Sun's Java technology leadership team. Judging is based on the innovation and creativity of the Java technology-based applications and services, including Web applications and tools, mobile applications and services, games, and card-based applications.
